WEARSIDE LEAGUE: MATCH IN FOCUS

Wynyard Village 1 – 5 Ferryhill Athletic

After a completely fruitless January in terms of games played, Ferryhill finally got back to action with an away fixture against Wynyard Village at Bede College in Billingham on Saturday.

Having had six weeks without a match the team started the game a little slowly, but ultimately ran out 5-1 victors with a dominating performance against the fifteenth-placed side. It took only three minutes for the visitors to take the lead, when Adam Morland scored with a neat chip that went over the head of the keeper. In one of Wynyard’s few attacks of the game, Athletic keeper Jacob Crowle pulled off a superb save when he tipped a long-range shot over the bar, and was in fine form for the rest of the game. Alex Quinn came close to scoring shortly after this, with Kieron McWaters completely bossing the game in midfield. Quinn again went near after twenty minutes, before Kieron Richardson shot across the face of goal. Richardson then had a perfectly good headed goal disallowed after an apparent foul on the build-up which nobody but the ref saw.

The wind refused for the second half, but Ferryhill stepped up a gear and added four more goals to their tally for the season. Billy Snaith had a terrific game and controlled everything that came his way and Reece Wilkinson had a very good spell at this point, blasting a shot past the keeper to make it 2-0. A superb unstoppable strike from McWaters resulted in the third goal, but a short spell of sloppy defending resulted in Wynyard notching one up. Quinn got the fourth with a belter of a shot that left the keeper floundering. Athletic could afford to give debuts to two new Joes, Hanson and Lanton, who both looked very capable. Richardson completed the scoring when he slotted home the fifth towards the end of the match, deservedly earning the Man of the Match award, despite there being any number of candidates for the role.

The midweek catch-up games begin on the evening of Wednesday 5th February with a rescheduled away game at Chester-le-Street United Reserves, followed by a home game on the 8th against i2i International Soccer Academy, kick-off 2.00pm
